The stretch between East Mockingbird and Gaston Avenue has spent years as the quieter cousin of Knox and Uptown, the place Lakewood residents drove out of when they wanted a full evening out. That equation is changing in a single season. A national wine retailer is claiming the old JoAnn Fabrics box on Mockingbird, an Italian steakhouse-and-speakeasy trio is finishing build-out, and a family-run Latin room on Gaston is already turning tables. Add the lake at your back door and you have a summer where you can plan the whole week inside the 75214.

The long-awaited new Total Wine & More store in Dallas' Lakewood neighborhood has set an opening date: Thursday, August 20. That's the day doors will open to the new wine and booze superstore located at 6330 E Mockingbird Ln., in the old Joann Fabrics, which closed in early 2025. The building had been dark long enough that a lot of neighbors had stopped noticing it.
For scale on what's about to land in a Lakewood strip center, the store is not a scaled-down neighborhood shop. The Lakewood Total Wine will span over 15,000 square feet and will carry more than 8,000 wines, 4,500 distilled spirits, and 2,500 beers, plus a robust lineup of non-alcoholic and THC-infused beverage options. There is also an in-store classroom for customer classes and events featuring winemakers, distillers, and brewers from around the world, which is the kind of programming Lakewood has traditionally borrowed from Knox and Preston Center. The Lakewood store is Total Wine's 42nd location in Texas and 15th in Dallas-Fort Worth, with hours 9 am–10 pm Monday–Thursday and 9 am–11 pm Friday–Saturday.
A steakhouse, a market, and a speakeasy at one address
The second arrival is a cluster, not a single restaurant. Lakewood Hospitality Group is opening early 2026 with Serritella Prime Italian Steakhouse, Serritella Market, and the COSA Speakeasy, positioned as the finest dining experience in Lakewood. The concept is unusual for the neighborhood because it is trying to be three things on one visit.
The steakhouse leans on a private supply chain. The menu pairs multigenerational Italian family recipes for pastas and pizzas with Texas Akaushi Wagyu steaks from the group's own ranch. The market next door is set up as the daytime counterpart, offering freshly made pastas, pizzas, sandwiches, breads, pastries and coffees to go, committed to convenience and quality. And the third door opens into a cocktail lounge for drinks, bites and live music built for dates, business meetings or a night out with friends. That last piece matters. Lakewood has had bars and it has had restaurants. It has not had a proper Italian-inflected lounge with live music inside walking distance of the residential blocks.
The Gaston Avenue room that's already open
While the other two are still on countdown, one has already turned the lights on. My Dream Latin Cuisine is now open at 7260 Gaston Ave., in the space that most recently belonged to Las Favela, and before that, Andrea's Italian for over a decade. If you drove past that address in 2024 and made a mental note that "something new is going in there," this is it.
The operator's résumé is the reason to pay attention. The concept is from Salvador Gamón, who hails from Zacatecas, Mexico, and has lived in Dallas since 1992, with a hospitality background that spans three decades — he started as a dishwasher and later worked as server and kitchen manager at Matt's Rancho Martinez, Mattito's, Truluck's, and Hugo's Invitados. He partnered with his brother Hugo and niece Ivette Ipina, and designed a Latin American menu that reflects his cumulative experience at kitchens around the city, and the influence of his family cooking together in Mexico. Translated into practical resident terms, this is a chef who has fed Lakewood tables from three different rooms over thirty years, now cooking for himself on Gaston.

The through-line is that each one absorbs a trip Lakewood residents have historically taken outside the neighborhood. A big-format wine store had been the last reason to drive to Mockingbird Station or further west. A destination Italian dinner meant heading toward Henderson or Knox. A special-occasion Latin room usually meant a reservation somewhere in Uptown. The three openings compress those trips into a triangle roughly two miles on a side.
The lake side of summer
The other half of Lakewood's summer is not a restaurant. White Rock Lake sits approximately 5 miles northeast of downtown Dallas across 1,015 acres, and is one of the most heavily used parks in the Dallas Park system and the location of many special events and runs. Two things worth pinning on the calendar this year:
White Rock Boat Club open house. The White Rock Boat Club invites the community to experience sailing and lake culture in an open house event from 1–6 p.m. July 5, designed to welcome newcomers to the club. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet club members, learn about sailing and kayaking opportunities, and experience the lake from the dock, with informational meetings about club membership and introduction to sailing classes. WRBC is a volunteer-run boat club that has operated since 1961, located at 340 E. Lawther Drive.

Celebration! White Rock. The Conservancy's annual run-and-party is back at Winfrey Point. The evening kicks off at 5:00 p.m. at Winfrey Point, where guests can check in, enjoy a pre-run stretch, and grab a photo at the lakeside booth, with an after-party across the finish line featuring local food and drink, local brews, and music while the sun sets over the water. Proceeds go back into the park.
If you want a lower-key way to spend a Saturday morning at the lake, the For the Love of the Lake volunteers meet every Second Saturday of each month to volunteer time towards picking up trash. It is the least glamorous item on this list and the one long-time residents mention first.
A Lakewood week that works this summer
Once the August 20 opening lands, a resident's week starts to look different without leaving the neighborhood:
- Weeknight dinner on Gaston. My Dream Latin Cuisine on the way home, no reservation drama.
- Saturday morning at the lake. Second-Saturday cleanup, then coffee somewhere on Abrams.
- Saturday errand loop. The Mockingbird Total Wine, then a stop at Serritella Market for pasta and bread instead of driving to Central Market.
- Saturday night. Serritella Prime for a proper Italian dinner, then next door into COSA for the live-music nightcap.
That is a full weekend that doesn't cross Central Expressway.
